KUCHING, March 16: The Sarawak government allocates a waqf or endowment fund of RM1 million to Universiti Sarawak Malaysia (Unimas) to assist them in doing research and development.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg hoped that the funding would go towards benefiting the people of Sarawak as the government is acting on their behalf.

“There must be a wider concept in the application and management of waqf and I am sure Unimas has a team of people who can manage it,” he told reporters at a press conference after officiating at the International Conference on Waqf And Endowment 2023 and Health WAQF Fund at the Waterfront Hotel here today.

“Unimas can use these endowment funds for research and development to do good for our common society and we applaud them for organising the conference, especially to discuss the concept of waqf and endowment.

Abang Johari said the conference would give a better understanding of the concept of waqf in Islam.

Also present at the press conference were Unimas vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and Unimas board chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie. — DayakDaily
