Sarawak Governor, wife extend condolences to landslide victims’ families in Miri

KUCHING, Jan 29: Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, have expressed their deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic landslide at Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri, which occurred at 2.50am today.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in this landslide tragedy.

“Al-Fatihah and heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have passed. May all the victims be granted a place among the righteous and the martyrs,” Wan Junaidi said in his message to the bereaved families.

According to reports, five individuals were killed in the disaster.

The Sarawak Civil Defence Force (APM) reported that the landslide struck two houses.

Seven people were inside the first house, where an adult male and a teenage girl managed to escape.

All five occupants of the second house, including three girls, survived the incident.

Rescuers discovered the remains of five victims buried beneath the rubble, with the first being a 16-year-old boy found at 6am.

At 10.44am, the body of a 41-year-old woman was found beneath the collapsed house.

Shortly after, at 11.18am, an eight-year-old girl was recovered, followed by a 12-year-old girl at 11.48am.

The deceased 41-year-old woman was reportedly the mother of all three deceased children.

The body of the final victim, a 71-year-old woman, was found at 6.10pm.

Tun Wan Junaidi also extended his appreciation to the rescue teams and authorities for their relentless efforts in managing the crisis.

He further emphasised the importance of safety for residents living in hillside and highland areas.

He stressed that it is crucial for authorities to take proactive measures, including regular inspections and safety monitoring of highland areas, to ensure the safety of residents and prevent such tragedies in the future. — DayakDaily
