KUCHING, Aug 20: Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was today conferred the Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Sarawak (PJPS) during a special ceremony held at the Astana Sarawak.
According to a statement, the medal was presented by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in recognition of Wan Junaidi’s service and contributions to the nation.
Accompanying the Governor at the ceremony was his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Second Minister for Finance and New Economy and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development; Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government; and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
Also attending were Wan Junaidi’s daughters, Sharifah Fariah and Sharifah Nong Jasima, together with the latter’s husband, Muhammad Nur Hakeem Yusop.
The PJPS is awarded as a mark of the Sarawak government’s appreciation for the service and sacrifices of veterans of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysia Police, who have played a vital role in safeguarding the country’s peace, sovereignty and security.
Wan Junaidi himself has a distinguished record of service in the Royal Malaysia Police. He joined the force in 1964 and later served in the Police Field Force from 1968 to 1973.
During that period, he was deployed to the Rajang Area Security Command (Rascom), one of Sarawak’s key security zones during the communist insurgency, where security personnel carried out operations to counter communist threats and maintain stability in Sarawak.
Speaking after receiving the award, Wan Junaidi expressed his sincere appreciation to the Premier and the Sarawak government for the honour.
He described the conferment as a reflection of the State’s commitment to recognising the dedication, loyalty and sacrifices of members of the country’s security and defence forces who have served selflessly in the interest of the people and the nation.
The award also underscores the Sarawak government’s continued efforts to honour veterans and acknowledge their contributions to preserving peace and security for future generations. — DayakDaily
