Sarawak government launches fund for Catherine and other fire tragedy victims

KUCHING, July 27: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has launched a fund, starting with RM50,000 from the Sarawak Government, for victims of the fire incident at SK Batu Bungan on July 25.

“The state government is deeply affected by the fire incident that has claimed the life of one of our teachers, the late Catherine Janet Tiwi and injured Nur Syuhada Azrani and Siti Masrina Nian. Following this, the state government has set up a fund to help Catherine’s family and other victims of the fire.

“We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the members of the public for your contribution,” said assistant secretary of Corporate Services of the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research, Jenny Erang in a statement.


Members of the public are welcome to contribute to the fund which will be channeled through the Tabung Perayaan Hari Guru Negeri Sarawak managed by the state Education Department.

All contributions can be deposited to the fund’s Bank Rakyat account number 111271007648.

Catherine, 25, was attending a five-day Primary School Evaluation Test (UPSR) motivational camp when the fire occurred at the staff quarters where she and her colleagues were staying.

The other two teachers were also injured, one with 22 per cent burns while the other suffered light burns on her feet.  — DayakDaily
