KUCHING, Feb 4: A total of 773 athletes from across Sarawak are taking part in the fourth edition of Sarawak Games (SUKSAR), the State’s official assessment programme for Sukma XXII 2026, with 105 gold, 105 silver, and 135 bronze medals up for grabs.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the biennial event provides a structured platform to evaluate athletes’ performance, including technical skills, mental strength, discipline, and endurance.

“The outcomes of SUKSAR IV will feed directly into Sarawak’s preparation for SUKMA XXII, scheduled in Selangor from Aug 15 to 24, 2026,” he said in his speech text when officiating the SUKSAR opening ceremony at Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Complex in Betong today.

The four-day competition, running from Feb 5 to 8, will be held across Sri Aman, Betong, and Lubok Antu, featuring 11 sports disciplines. Athletes will compete in four zones: Northern Zone (227 athletes), Central Zone (171), Western Zone (164), and Southern Zone (211).

“Sarawak has set a clear target to defend its overall championship at SUKMA XXII, with SUKSAR IV serving as a key benchmark to identify athletes capable of consistent national-level performance.

“Athletes are expected to gain match experience and demonstrate consistency, while coaches and officials play a crucial role in guiding their training and development,” he added.

SUKSAR IV 2026 is also expected to contribute to the long-term development of sports in Sarawak and strengthen the State’s athlete pipeline for future national and international competitions. — DayakDaily
