KUCHIING, Aug 31: Sarawak is proactively pursuing carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) initiatives to become a regional CCUS technology leader, which involves the creation of comprehensive frameworks for legal, technical, finance, business and taxation as well as human resource to establish a strong base for both CCUS and green projects.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni highlighted this when gracing the H2Asia 2023 Conference at InterContinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur yesterday (Aug 30).
According to a media release, Dr Hazland’s presence at the conference was the result of a personal invitation extended by His Excellency Morten Paulsen, the Ambassador of Norway to Malaysia.
In his address, he emphasised the pivotal role that CCUS plays in the global fight against climate change by driving industrial decarbonisation through efficient carbon capture and storage mechanisms.
He said that these initiatives not only align with Sarawak’s climate action commitments but also present promising opportunities and new avenues for economic growth.
Attributing this vision to the remarkable leadership of the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Dr Hazland underscored Sarawak government’s proactive approach to creating a symbiotic relationship between environmental conservation and economic prosperity.
To facilitate successful CCUS projects and other green endeavours, he stressed the significance of establishing four essential frameworks: the Legal Framework, the Technical Framework, the Financial, Business, and Taxation Framework, and the Human Resource Framework.
Dr Hazland extended an invitation to all attendees, encouraging them to partake in the forthcoming Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference scheduled for July 2024 in Kuching.
He highlighted that this event will delve even deeper into the realm of sustainable energy solutions.
The H2Asia 2023 conference, cohesively organised by Ezra & Macquarie Group, gathered renowned organisations, driving the energy and sustainability landscape.
The event provided a platform for immersive discussions centering on project financing, technological advancements, industry updates, and the policy panorama.
Key players from the hydrogen and CCUS sectors, including Clara Energy, FuelCell Energy, NEL, Rystad Energy, Black & Veatch, MUFG Bank Ltd, Bird & Bird, Energy Institute Singapore, RESMAN, ABB, and many others, enriched the discourse with their expertise. — DayakDaily
