KUCHING, Dec 1: Sarawak will extend the Dual Language Programme (DLP) to secondary schools starting in 2026, beginning with all Form 1 students who will continue under the programme until Form 5. At the upper secondary level, pure science subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Additional Mathematics will be taught entirely in English.

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the expansion is a key strategy to raise education standards and strengthen outcomes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“DLP Sarawak is helping to prepare our students to be more competitive and better equipped for the future. This is especially important as we work to increase enrolment in STEM fields and produce high-quality graduates among Sarawak students,” he said during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

Results from the Ujian Penilaian (Assessment Test) DLP Sarawak for Year 6 pupils, conducted in October, showed an overall passing rate of 90.97 per cent in English. Science recorded a passing rate of 84.71 per cent, while Mathematics trailed at 61.01 per cent, particularly in rural schools and those with smaller enrolment.

Sagah highlighted the need for targeted support to strengthen Mathematics and Science, stressing that focused interventions will continue to improve student outcomes and build a highly skilled STEM-capable workforce by 2030. — DayakDaily
