KUCHING, Oct 25: Sarawak Energy is stepping up on its efforts to establish the Borneo Grid connecting with Sabah, Kalimantan in Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam.
According to a statement today, speaking during the plenary sessions of the 17th edition of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW 2024) recently, its chief executive officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, said, however, cross-border interconnection comes with complex risks that can only be overcome with governments working together on a common framework, empowering private sector in the implementation of interconnection projects.
“There is also the need for concerted efforts among ASEAN governments to formulate a comprehensive framework with forward-looking energy policies to guide the region’s energy transition.
“The private sector needs support from the governments to facilitate the delivery of the ASEAN Power Grid, which would enable the sharing of renewable energy resources among neighbouring countries, ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition in the region,” he said when during plenary sessions of 17th edition of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW 2024) recently.
Earlier on at the event, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg delivered a keynote address highlighting Sarawak’s focus on socio-economic growth through renewable hydropower and the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030.
He also shared with the audience of energy and sustainability leaders how Sarawak is exploring additional renewable sources like solar, biomass and hydrogen to power the state’s future while emphasising the importance of regional collaboration, particularly advancing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) for an inclusive regional energy transition.
