KUCHING, Sept 22: Sarawak Energy will roll out a new subsidy scheme of up to RM12,000 for domestic customers installing rooftop solar under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme, starting 2026.
The initiative not only reduces upfront costs for rooftop solar adoption but also allows customers to export excess electricity to the grid, with credits offset against their monthly bills.
In support of Sarawak’s renewable energy agenda, Sarawak Energy stated that the scheme makes rooftop solar installations more accessible to Domestic Tariff customers by enabling long-term energy savings and encouraging greater participation in sustainable living.
“The NEM scheme allows domestic customers with Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems to generate electricity and export to the grid. The exported electricity is credited to their bills, lowering monthly costs while allowing the community to play a part in Sarawak’s renewable energy journey and reducing Malaysia’s carbon footprint,” the company said in a media release today.
The initiative aligns with the Sarawak government’s Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), which targets wider renewable energy adoption and decarbonisation to drive sustainable growth.
The subsidy is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to quota availability. The amount varies by installation size: RM12,000 for systems above 6 to 50kWac; RM10,000 for systems above 3.5 to 6kWac; and RM8,000 for systems ranging from 2 to 3.5kWac.
To ensure safety and quality, Sarawak Energy emphasised that all NEM installations must be carried out by certified Solar PV Designers registered with the Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak.
Applications must be submitted to Sarawak Energy customer service counters on behalf of customers.
The subsidy applies only to successful NEM installations from 2026 under the Domestic Tariff category for landed residential properties. It is limited to one installation per account owner and excludes households with existing solar PV systems.
However, customers signing NEM contracts in 2025 may still submit claims for consideration, with approved subsidies payable from January 2026.
To raise public awareness, Sarawak Energy will showcase the scheme at the Malaysian Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA) Solar Roadshow on Sept 22, 2025 at the Sheraton Hotel in Kuching. Members of the public are invited to learn more and explore how they can benefit from the programme.
