KOTA SAMARAHAN, June 28: As part of efforts to enhance public safety and improve rural infrastructure, a total of 2,595 streetlights were installed across 454 villages in Sarawak under Phase 8 of the Lampu Jalan Kampung (LJK) project, including 517 LED units allocated by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) for the Samarahan Division.
The initiative was implemented and is maintained by Sarawak Energy, in collaboration with KKDW.
In a media release, Sarawak Energy emphasised that the LJK project, which was completed on March 10 this year, aims to improve safety and accessibility in rural areas while supporting local community, social and economic activities.
Since its inception in 2002, the programme has seen the successful installation of 57,327 streetlights throughout Sarawak.

To commemorate the completion of Phase 8, a handover ceremony was held today at Dewan Kampung Merdang Lumut, Kota Samarahan, witnessed by Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.
The event featured the symbolic handover of streetlights from KKDW, represented by Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang, to Sarawak Energy, represented by its general manager for Rural Electrification Nazry Abdul Latip.
In his speech, Julaihi reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure and expanding access to essential services, applauding the strong Federal-State collaboration in delivering impactful projects like LJK for rural communities.
Highlighting the project as a key federal government initiative, Rubiah said such efforts play a strategic role in advancing rural development and improving quality of life. She also emphasised that proper lighting along village access roads is crucial for public safety.
The LJK project uses energy-efficient LED technology, which helps reduce carbon emissions while providing reliable lighting—aligning with Sarawak Energy’s sustainability goals and commitment to environmental responsibility.

Sarawak Energy reaffirmed its commitment to achieve full rural electrification and enhance living standards in remote communities. This aligns with the Sarawak’s broader vision under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Guided by MUT Sarawak, the company continues to advance rural electrification through initiatives such as the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES), Rural Power Supply Scheme (RPSS), Additional Late Application Fund (ALAF), and the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (SARES).
Through continued collaboration and strategic implementation, Sarawak Energy plays a vital role in bridging the urban-rural development gap while supporting Sarawak’s long-term sustainability and progress.
Also present were Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim, permanent secretary to MUT Datu Jafri Lias, Sarawak Energy’s senior vice president for Corporate Services Siti Aisah Adenan, along with other officials, community leaders and local residents. — DayakDaily
