MIRI, July 31: A total of 191 confiscated devices, including cryptocurrency mining machines, laptops, modems, and electrical appliances, worth an estimated RM305,000, were destroyed during a recent disposal exercise following power theft enforcement raids in Miri.
Sarawak Energy, through its operations and retail arm Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco), carried out the destruction at its Miri Regional Office in late June under the directive of the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak and by order of the Miri Magistrate Court.
According to a media release today, the equipment had been seized in earlier operations targeting illegal electricity use, particularly in connection with cryptocurrency mining activities.
The disposal exercise was witnessed by representatives from MUT, the State Attorney-General’s Chambers (SAGC), and Sesco’s enforcement team.
Despite Sarawak offering some of the most competitive electricity tariffs in the region, Sarawak Energy noted that electricity theft, especially for power-intensive cryptocurrency mining, remains a significant issue.
The utility company warned that these illegal connections pose serious safety risks, including potential fire hazards, equipment damage, and power disruptions that can inconvenience surrounding households and businesses.
Sarawak Energy reiterated that electricity theft is a criminal offence under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance.
The company urges the public to report any suspicious activities by calling its Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or emailing customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All information will be handled with strict confidentiality. — DayakDaily
