KUCHING, Feb 17: Sarawak is not exempted from the issue of student absenteeism in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
In a TVS news report, Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli revealed that some students did not sit for the written SPM exam, with many missing it due to working to support their families.
“Schools have intervened, with teachers personally visiting students’ homes to encourage them to attend. However, if they still choose not to sit for the exam despite our efforts, there is little more we can do.
“We urge parents to support teachers in advising their children to attend school and sit for their exams. If the effort comes solely from teachers, ensuring student participation becomes much harder,” he said.
He made these remarks when visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jalan Haji Baki for the new school session today.
Omar emphasised that schools have been identifying students with frequent absenteeism since the beginning of the year.
He added that some students were also unable to attend due to prolonged illness, which was unavoidable.
“However, they will have the opportunity to sit for the exam in the future if they apply,” he added. — DayakDaily
