KUCHING, Nov 13: The Sarawak Education Department aims to fully extend the Dual Language Programme (DLP) to secondary schools in Sarawak by 2026.
Its director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad, who is set to retire, highlighted that this initiative will ensure that students not only excel in science and mathematics but also master the English language, empowering them to take on more significant roles in the future.
“The successful implementation of the DLP in all primary schools across Sarawak are among the several key achievements in the education sector,” he said after a farewell visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) here today.
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Azhar expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude, particularly to the Premier and the Sarawak government for their unwavering support of the State’s education sector.
He emphasised that the various development initiatives and programmes carried out by the Sarawak Education Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia, have always enjoyed the full backing of the Sarawak government.
“We take great pride in this support and feel incredibly fortunate to have a leader with such a far-reaching vision for Sarawak’s development. Certainly, the Sarawak Education Department plays a vital role in preparing the human resources needed to drive the State’s diverse development agendas,” he said.
Azhar has served as Sarawak Education Department director for nearly five years, from 2018 to March 2020 and from March 2022 to Nov 14, 2024. — DayakDaily
