KUCHING, Feb 27: The Sarawak government has approved an allocation of RM1.3 million to enhance the operations of four Homeless Transit Centres (TTG) across the State, as part of a comprehensive approach to tackling homelessness.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the funding covers the existing TTGs in Kuching and Sibu, as well as two new centres in Bintulu and Miri, which are expected to be fully operational later this year.
“The four centres were established based on field observations and data identifying the distribution and number of homeless individuals in Sarawak’s key regions.
“The allocation we requested is for all four TTGs, as each will be operational. Funds are distributed according to the specific needs of each area and the number of homeless people identified,” she explained.
Speaking to the media after contributing at the Kuching Division Aidilfitri “Sejambak Kasih” event today, Fatimah highlighted that the funds will be used to provide basic necessities for residents, including bedding, at least one meal per day, and allowances for supervisors and staff managing the centres.
“Our goal is to ensure that homeless individuals no longer have to sleep on the streets. Through the TTGs, they are given a safe space to rest, eat, and receive the support they need,” she said.
The minister also noted that the implementation of the TTGs has already shown positive results, with a noticeable decrease in the number of homeless individuals at key enforcement locations.
She stressed that managing homeless populations requires trained personnel and a professional approach, especially when dealing with individuals facing mental health challenges.
“Some residents have mental health issues and may exhibit aggressive behaviour. That is why trained staff are essential to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” Fatimah said.
The Kuching TTG has a capacity of up to 100 residents and currently operates from a rented shoplot due to challenges in securing a more suitable site. Accommodation is segregated for men and women to ensure comfort and safety for all residents.
