MUKAH, Oct 3: A semiconductor chip designed by a Sarawakian and produced by a Sarawak-based foundry has been purchased for use in electric meters to be marketed in China, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the Sarawakku Sayang Programme in Mukah today, he said the development reflected Sarawak’s growing ability to design and manufacture semiconductor technology locally.
“This development demonstrates the importance of building local expertise in science, technology and innovation as Sarawak moves towards a knowledge-based economy,” he said.
Abang Johari said Sarawak needed to continue developing skilled talent capable of applying new knowledge and technology across key sectors, including manufacturing and agriculture.
“This is why we need our children to have knowledge and skills. In the manufacturing and agriculture sectors, we need new knowledge and technology to continue developing and remain competitive,” he said.
The development also comes as Sarawak continues to strengthen its semiconductor capabilities, with Abang Johari previously urging students to pursue science and emerging technology fields, including artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, to meet the needs of the State’s growing high-tech industries. — DayakDaily
