KUCHING, Oct 3: The world’s latest microchip innovation, Keteq AI, designed by a Sarawakian talent and launched earlier this year, is expected to secure intellectual property (IP) rights by the end of this year or in the first quarter of next year.
In disclosing this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg recalled his recent trip to London, United Kingdom, where Sarawakian Shariman Jamil, the chief executive officer of SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd who is currently based in Cardiff, Wales, unveiled Keteq.GaN, a Gallium Nitride-based technology that complements Keteq AI.
“Up to today, this chip (Keteq AI) is the latest of its kind in the world. And with your prayers, God willing, by the end of this year or by the first quarter of next year, we may obtain the IP rights.
“This will mean that a creation from Sarawak will be used across the world, because it is the most advanced chip design in the system today,” he said during the opening ceremony of Sekolah Rendah Agama Datuk Haji Mohamad Mortadza Haji Daud located in FAC Access Road here today.
Abang Johari went on to highlight that Shariman, who holds a Master’s degree in microelectronics, had worked in Silicon Valley before returning home.
“Now, he has successfully created a new chip architecture which we launched in London,” he added.
He quipped that the invention should not be mistaken as “cheap”, pointing out the play on words since “chip” and “cheap” sound alike in English.
“But this chip is not cheap,” he said with a smile, stressing that the invention will soon find its way into mobile phones and other devices worldwide. — DayakDaily
