KUCHING, Dec 31: Sarawak Day, which falls on July 22 every year, will be celebrated earlier next year, says Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said the 60th anniversary of ‘Sarawak Merdeka Dalam Malaysia’ (Sarawak’s independence in Malaysia), also known as Sarawak Day 2023, is organised by his ministry in collaboration with other public bodies.

“The official date of Sarawak’s independence actually falls on July 22, but the celebration of this event will take place earlier. This is to allow all Sarawakians throughout the State to feel the excitement of the celebration and the meaning behind this festival.

“The celebration of this festival is also a platform to convey the initiatives of the Sarawak government through various programmes and activities that will be organised and implemented.

“Insya-Allah (God willing), among the main events in the celebration of Sarawak Day 2023 that has been planned will be officially announced soon,” he said during the New Year Eve’s Countdown to usher in 2023 held at the Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya here earlier tonight.

Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), emphasised that Sarawakians must see the anniversary celebration as the best foundation for sowing patriotic spirit and unity among the multiracial community in Bumi Kenyalang.

Thanking the people for their continuous commitment and support towards the Sarawak government, he said this reflected the strong unity and understanding among Sarawakians.

“The people have also shown strong support for the aspirations of the Sarawak government under the leadership of the Premier of Sarawak, who is far-sighted in planning development to steer Sarawak to achieving a resilient and sustainable growth.

“As such, it is hoped that this New Year Eve’s countdown celebration will enhance our enthusiasm to continue to work together in fostering unity and harmony in our diverse community in Sarawak so that we can enjoy prosperity and progress together,” he added.

At the New Year Countdown 2023 event, the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, were present.

The event was organised by Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) in collaboration with MTCP, various government agencies, local councils, the police and other parties.

Also seen were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi. — DayakDaily
