KUCHING, July 22: Sarawak Day became even more meaningful for the people of Miri as construction on the iconic San Francisco-style Marina Bridge project has officially begun.
According to his official Facebook page, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the dual-lane cable-stayed bridge will span the mouth of the Miri River, connecting Pulau Melayu to Marina, and is expected to further boost tourism and the local economy.
“The landscape of Miri city must be upgraded with iconic facilities, while also providing convenient routes for the people of Miri and the visitors who come here.
“We are developing infrastructure—firstly, to enhance the tourism sector, and secondly, to support the growth of modern agriculture in northern Sarawak.
“This bridge, which will connect Marina to the Kuala Baram area, including the Miri Port, will create a new route linking Miri to Kuala Baram,” he said.
He said this during a press conference after officiating the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in Miri today.
The Premier added that once completed, the iconic bridge will also help resolve long-standing traffic congestion issues along Jalan Piasau.
Spanning 650m with a cost of RM450 million, the bridge is expected to be completed within four years.
Meanwhile, he shared that with the cooperation of local elected representatives and the State government administration, he has a long-term development plan for Miri and northern Sarawak, including areas adjacent to the city.
“I’ve also announced that we will develop a satellite township in Beraya. Beraya is located between Miri and Niah Caves, and Niah Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” he said.
Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki were also present. — DayakDaily
