KUCHING, April 27: A total of 191 students staying in the dormitories of SMK Tabuan Jaya, the only sports school in Sarawak, are currently under lockdown after 14 Covid-19 positive cases were reported there.

A team from Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) led by Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii and former Stampin MP Julian Tan visited the school today to deliver some essential items to the affected students.

“We want to show our concern and to better understand the needs of the students that are under quarantine due to the detection of positive Covid-19 cases among them.

“We were informed that there are now 14 positive cases among the students and that is why all students in the hostels are currently under lockdown to contain further spread of infections,” Dr Yii said in a statement.

He added that the State Health Department has also conducted mass screening on all students and staff.

Dr Yii revealed the 191 students come from all over Sarawak.

“This is the only sports school in Sarawak so they have the best athletes from all around Sarawak studying and training here.

“Many have represented Sarawak and even Malaysia, bringing pride and fame to our nation. They are our current and future stars and I strongly believe we need to find ways to better take care of their welfare,” he added.

Noting that students were provided with food, Dr Yii emphasised that the Sarawak DAP team has raised some funds to purchase additional food supplies in an effort to show support and encouragement to the students who are not allowed to leave the campus throughout the lockdown period.

“We want to thank all the health officers, teachers and staff that are working hard to take care of the well-being of these students. We may not have much but we will try to do as much as we can,” he said. — DayakDaily
