KUCHING, March 10: Sarawak’s Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle 7,108 grams of cannabis into the State, with an estimated value of RM244,340.
Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said the operation, conducted on February 3, involved the seizure of two separate parcels at a courier service facility in Jalan Song, Kuching.
“The first package, weighing 4,926 grams and valued at RM147,780, was discovered at approximately 10.30am.
“The drugs were concealed in brown wrapping paper, aluminium foil, and plastic packaging,” he said in a statement today.
A second package, containing 2,182 grams of cannabis worth RM96,560, was seized just ten minutes later at the same location. Authorities found five packets wrapped in brown paper and three others concealed in aluminium foil.
According to Norizan, the smugglers used air courier services from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak, falsely declaring the packages as ‘merchandise’.
The confiscated drugs have been seized under Section 30(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Further investigations are underway, with the case classified under Section 39B of the same Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
Authorities urged the public to assist in combating smuggling activities, including drugs, contraband cigarettes, alcohol, and other illegal goods, by providing information through the Customs toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855. JKDM assured that all informants’ identities would be kept confidential. – DayakDaily
