KUCHING, Sept 4: The Sarawak government has officially declared Sept 15, 2025 (Monday) as an additional public holiday in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration.
The declaration, published in the Sarawak Government Gazette today, was made under Section 5 of the Public Holidays Ordinance (Sarawak Chapter 8), as an addition to the public holidays already listed under the First Schedule of the Ordinance.

This follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement on July 23 that Sept 15 this year would be declared an additional holiday in recognition of the spirit of unity and the significance of Malaysia’s formation as a nation.
Anwar said the holiday serves as a gesture of appreciation for the bonds of unity and the uniqueness of Malaysia’s formation, while also encouraging Malaysians to strengthen family ties in their hometowns or take the opportunity to travel and holiday within the country.
In a post published on its official social media, the Sarawak Labour Department under the Ministry of Human Resources stated that with this decision, the Sept 15 holiday will be in addition to the 18 public holidays provided under paragraph 104(1)(a) of the Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Chapter 76),
Employees covered by the Labour Ordinance are entitled to this holiday on Sept 15, 2025, in line with paragraph 104(1)(b).
Employers, however, may designate another day as a substitute holiday for this additional public holiday.
If the declared holiday falls on a rest day, the following working day shall be treated as the replacement holiday.
Meanwhile, employees required to work on that day must be paid at the public holiday rate as stipulated under subsections 104(6), (7), (8) and (9) of the Ordinance. — DayakDaily
