KUCHING, Oct 9: The Sarawak Cancer Centre project is still under the value assessment lab before the federal government can appoint a consultant to carry out the project, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He explained that although the Sarawak government has agreed to fund the project first, it remains a federal government project and the cost will be reimbursed later.

“My understanding is that even though the funding comes from the Sarawak government, it is a federal project.

“The Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) are going through the value assessment lab process to look at the costs and requirements,” he told reporters after officiating the ‘Digital Sarawak – Blockchain Infrastructure for a Smarter Borneo’ opening ceremony held at Borneo Cultures Museum here today.

He further said once the value assessment lab is completed, the next step will be for the federal government to appoint a consultant.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said he would brief the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg once he has received the full details of the project.

“It’s our money, even though it is being implemented by the federal government. But that’s beside the point. At least we will finally get the cancer hospital,” he said.

Dr Sim also clarified that the value assessment lab is a standard step in federal project procedures, where experts, economists and relevant ministries evaluate cost-effectiveness and technical details before implementation.

“Even if we propose a 300-bed facility, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has to agree because they will be responsible for the operational costs later.

“Building costs are one thing, but maintaining and operating such a hospital every year incurs a very high cost,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
