KUCHING, Dec 12: The Sarawak Cancer Centre is set to be Malaysia’s largest dedicated and only full-fledged cancer centre, forming a cornerstone of the Sarawak health metropolis at Samarahan, spanning a 6-kilometre medical and research corridor.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian highlighted the centre’s strategic role following a fruitful meeting with Minister of Health Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and the ministry’s senior management team on the proposed facility at Putrajaya on Thursday (Dec 11).
“The Sarawak Cancer Centre is more than just a hospital; it is a vital component of the Samarahan Health Metropolis, alongside the Sarawak Heart Centre, Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Hospital,” he said in a post shared on his social media.
The centre will feature 310 beds within a gross floor area of 154,498.26 square metres, with a total cost of RM1.5 billion after the value lab by MOH and Ministry of Works Malaysia.
The Sarawak government will lend RM1 billion to the federal government for the project. Operationally, the centre will be managed by the MOH Malaysia, with annual federal funding covering staff salaries, medications, and consumables, while the Ministry of Works Malaysia serves as the implementation agency.
Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, stressed that the centre will also complement other key hubs within Samarahan, including the higher learning and research institutions such as Unimas, UiTM Sarawak Campus, and the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, as well as the manufacturing hub in Samalaju Free Industry Zones.
“I am looking forward (for further discussions during) the National Strategic Project Monitoring Special Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Dec 15, 2025,” he added.
The Sarawak Cancer Centre represents a leap forward in healthcare access and medical research in Sarawak, given its potential to transform Samarahan into a national hub for advanced healthcare and innovation. — DayakDaily
