KUCHING, 25 Nov: Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang has clarified that the Sarawak Building Board (SBB) will regulate professionals claiming expertise in green building and technology and renewable energy.
Speaking at a press conference today following the tabling of the Building (Amendment) Bill 2025 by Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Lo said the board is separate from existing professional bodies, including the Board of Engineers, Board of Architects, and Board of Surveyors.
“The Sarawak Building Board will ensure that anyone professing to be a specialist in green building or green energy is properly accredited by their respective organisation.
“Whether they are local or overseas, the Board will verify and approve them before they can practise here,” he said.
Lo noted the current lack of formal oversight, which allows unverified individuals to undertake projects in the green sector.
“At present, there is no mechanism to regulate this. People claim they can do it and proceed without verification,” he added, stressing that the board will cover engineers, architects, builders, planners, and all professionals involved in green initiatives.
The Sarawak Building Board will also standardise qualifications, enforce accountability, and ensure that projects claiming environmental sustainability or energy efficiency meet verified standards. — DayakDaily
