KUCHING, Nov 24: With Sarawak set to co-host the 2027 SEA Games, preparations and upgrades to sports venues and facilities will commence next year, supported by an allocation of RM107 million under the Sarawak Budget 2026.
During the tabling of the budget at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said 11 sports facilities has been designated as official venues for the 2027 SEA Games which include the Sarawak Stadium, Stadium Perpaduan, Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, and Sarawak Cricket Ground, among others.
“In addition, RM54 million will be committed for the construction and enhancement of other sport complexes and facilities throughout the State,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Premier also announced that RM117 million will be allocated to the Ministry of Youths, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development which include RM73 million to Sarawak Sports Corporation and Majlis Sukan Negeri Sarawak for their operations, as well as continuous youth and sports development programmes.
He said several key initiatives will continue next year to transform Sarawak to become a sports powerhouse in Malaysia by 2030, including:
- Suksar (Sukan Sarawak): A State-level multi-sport event to identify and nurture young talent, serving as a feeder for national competitions such as Sukma.
- Sarawak X-Tive Programme: A flagship initiative by the Sarawak government to build a healthier, more active, and socially cohesive society through youth-focused sports and cultural engagement. It serves as a grassroots platform to uncover and develop sporting potential across communities.
- International sports event hosting: Strategic collaborations with global sports bodies to bring world- class exposure to local athletes.
“Sarawak aspires to become a regional leader in sports excellence, leveraging sports as a catalyst for unity, youth empowerment, and economic growth,” he said. — DayakDaily
