BRUNEI, Oct 3: Sarawak and Brunei have the potential to position themselves as joint leaders in the expanding global halal market, particularly targeting major consumers in the Middle East.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg called for close collaboration to create a strong halal brand that resonates with the Middle Eastern consumers.
“We see tremendous potential in commercial agriculture, including paddy cultivation, aquaculture, and cattle and buffalo rearing. These initiatives not only aim to enhance self-sufficiency but also open new avenues for cooperation between our regions in the global market.
“The northern region of Sarawak, particularly the Limbang and Lawas valleys, holds significant agricultural potential, which we will develop as part of our food security agenda, particularly in rice production and livestock development,” he said.
Abang Johari made these remarks during the launch of the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei Darussalam (STATOB) at Pavo Point today.
The Premier also affirmed Sarawak’s committment to supporting Brunei in achieving a 10 per cent renewable energy generation mix by 2035, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Tourism was highlighted as another key area for collaboration, with Abang Johari noting that Sarawak and Brunei could work together to promote events that showcase their vibrant cultures and natural attractions.
He also underscored the potential for the regions’ airports to serve as international travel hubs.
On infrastructure development, he revealed that the Sarawak government is investing approximately RM6 billion to construct a coastal highway connecting Lawas and Limbang. This project, aimed for completion by 2030, will improve travel through Brunei to other parts of Sarawak.
“STATOB represents Sarawak’s bold commitment to deepening economic cooperation with Brunei, built on the Exchange of Letters signed in 2009.
“This office mirrors our efforts with the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Singapore (STATOS), as we lay the groundwork for a mutually beneficial partnership that will resonate throughout our communities,” he added.
Abang Johari stressd that STATOB is not just about trade, but about fostering stronger cultural exchange.
“The opening of STATOB marks a new era of learning, celebrating our unique heritages, and deepening ties between our communities,” he added.
Abang Johari concluded by expressing Sarawak’s deep appreciation to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Brunei government for their enduring friendship and strong bilateral relations built over the years.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki were among those present. — DayakDaily
