Sarawak ‘badly needs’ English language, says political pundit

KUCHING, Oct 29: Usage of the English language is crucial for Sarawak as English is a global language, says political pundit Dato Peter Minos.

The former Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu deputy info chief said regardless of the opinion or action in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak must stick to what Sarawak has agreed upon in Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), that is usage of English along with Bahasa Malaysia, as means of communication.

“We go English not because what people say but because this global language is so vital in our lives. We badly need it.

“English is no longer a colonial language. It is a global language of commerce, industry, banking, finance, internet and many others,” he said in a statement today.

He said there is no way one can escape from seeing the English language being used everywhere.

“If the peninsular people can skip it, good luck to them. But they must not disturb Sarawak. We have a life and future to look after and that is in our hands.

“This (usage of) English is one issue that Sarawakians defend and stand together on. No way we can forsake English. Simply no way,” he added.

Meanwhile, commenting on the Palestinian-Israel conflict, Minos said it is best and wise to put pressure on USA and prick their conscience to bring about peace to the troubled Middle East region.

He said as difficult it may be, only USA has the real power to get the two warring groups to the peace table to talk and negotiate, including ceasing the killing. — DayakDaily
