BINTULU, Feb 27: The Sarawak government has approved a special allocation of RM2.1 million for the construction of a new assembly hall at SMK Bintulu, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure and providing a more conducive learning environment for students in the fast-growing town.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said the project will be funded under the Special Development Assistance Fund (SDAF) and is expected to enter the tender stage within the next one to two months.

He added that the initiative underscores the State government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade school facilities to ensure greater comfort, safety and functionality for both students and educators.

“SMK Bintulu has over 3,000 students and has been operating for more than 50 years. With its current enrolment, the need for a more complete and comfortable assembly hall has become increasingly urgent.

“This special allocation will enable the school’s basic facilities to be upgraded in a more comprehensive and systematic manner,” he said after conducting a site visit to the school on Thursday (Feb 26).

Pang explained that the visit aimed to gather technical input and ensure that safety requirements and design specifications meet the necessary standards before the tender process is initiated.

“Once the design plans are finalised, the project will proceed to open tender, with construction expected to commence middle of this year,” he said.

He also conveyed his appreciation to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the State government for approving the allocation, describing it as a crucial investment in human capital development in Bintulu.

The site visit was attended by representatives from the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Public Works Department (JKR), the District Education Office and the school administration to coordinate technical requirements and ensure smooth project implementation. — DayakDaily
