KUCHING, Oct 23: The Sarawak government has set aside RM1.1 billion to replace all the old water pipes in the State, some of which date back to the colonial era.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the ambitious project is set to begin next year and aims to replace the outdated infrastructure with modern, smart piping technology by 2030.
He announced this in his speech when officiating at Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference 2024 (BIWWEC 2024) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Abang Johari explained that he has tasked Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi with mapping the entire pipe network.
“Sometimes when there are leaks, we do not know that there are pipes in that area. Even when we build roads, we do not have the data to show that there are pipes lying in that particular area.
“While some pipes are detectable with current technology, older and heavily corroded pipes remain difficult to locate,” he said.
Abang Johari also disclosed that a digital network will store data on pipe locations and conditions, allowing for efficient monitoring and management.
In case of any damage or leaks, alerts will be triggered, allowing swift responses from the authorities.
“The RM1.1 billion allocation will cover a five-year period, averaging around RM200 million per year,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
