KUCHING, Sept 7: Sarawak Association for Peoples’ Aspiration (SAPA) is calling on the public to participate in a peaceful protest in Miri on oil and gas issues.

Its president, Lina Soo, said the Sept 22 rally would abide by the Peaceful Assembly Act and the gathering point is Miri Central Padang at 8am. From there, the
participants would move in a convoy to the Petronas office in Lutong, where the association plans to deliver a memorandum before dispersing.

“After 44 years (since the introduction of the Petroleum Development Act 1974) of our oil and gas resources being sucked out of Sarawak with little compensation, Sarawak this day, remains one of the poorest territories in Malaysia.

“SAPA urges Sarawakians to support the initiative to get justice for our natural resources, particularly oil and gas found in our soil and offshore territories,” she said in a statement.

The association advised the participants to turn up in black attires for the protest themed ‘Sarawak Soil, Sarawak Oil’.

She said all political parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were welcomed to join the protest. For more information, they can contact the organising chairman, Fong Pau Teck, at 012-8832885. — DayakDaily
