KUCHING, July 20: A simple 722 celebration with the raising of the old Sarawak flag and the singing of Sarawak’s original national anthem ‘Fair Land Sarawak’ will be conducted at Central Padang, Kuching this July 22 (Wednesday).
Sarawak Association for Peoples’ Aspirations (Sapa) president Dominique Ng asserted this year’s celebration must go on despite the Covid-19 pandemic because the people has yet to realise the true significance of the day.
“While it (July 22) has been recognised by the current Sarawak government as a public holiday, and is being celebrated as ‘Sarawak Day’, it is not being celebrated as Sarawak’s Independence Day,” Ng highlighted in a statement.
Following the co-hosting of the 722 event last year with other Sarawak independence nationalists, Ng invited all Sarawakians to join the celebration at Kuching Central Padang this year.
“The 722 (July 22) is now the day and the symbol for Sarawak’s independence.
“It must continue to symbolise our continual struggle for Sarawak’s real independence,” he added. — DayakDaily
