KUCHING, Feb 21: Samarahan and Serian are the latest divisions to be declared as rabies-infected areas following the detection of positive cases in animals there.
This brings the total number of divisions in Sarawak declared as rabies-infected areas to four, with Kuching and Bintulu divisions retaining this status.
Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom emphasised the necessity of this declaration to prompt intensified efforts in the affected divisions.
“Thus far this year, out of 133 samples tested, 20 animals have tested positive for rabies.
“Cases of animal rabies were identified in Kuching (10), Padawan (3), Samarahan (1), Bau (1), Tebedu (1), Bintulu (2) and Sebauh (2),” he said in a statement today.
Positive rabies cases were reported at Lorong Tabuan Timur 3A, Jalan Tabuan; Tabuan Plaza and Tabuan Desa Indah in Jalan Bayor Bukit; Lorong Alwi 7; Taman BDC in Stutong; Kompos DBKU in Jalan Demak; Kampung Sagah in Bau; Riverbank Batu Kawah in Padawan; Lorong SPS 2, Stapok Resettlement Scheme in Batu Kawa; Carina Estate in Jalan Stapok Utama; Kampung Medang Limau in Samarahan; Kampung Entubuh in Tebdu; Junction 5 and Taman Bandarjaya on Jalan Tun Hussein Onn in Bintulu; and Sungai Lumok Engkasu, Tubau in Sebauh.
“In this regard, I would like to remind the public to take extra precaution and go to the nearest clinic if bitten by an animal,” Dr Rundi said. — DayakDaily
