KUCHING, May 31: The Kuching High Court today sentenced a salesman to a jail term of 15 years for causing death to the boyfriend of his former girlfriend in 2019.

Ling Thai Long, 28, pleaded guilty to the alternative charge under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code.

High Court Judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli meted out the sentence of an imprisonment of 15 years on him.

According to the alternative charge, the accused allegedly committed culpable homicide not amounting to murder by causing death to Bong Wei Liang with the intention of causing bodily injury, at a house in Kuang Tiong Park, at about 4.30 am on Nov 15, 2019.

He was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 30 years and shall be liable to fine, upon conviction.

According to the brief facts of the case, the accused and the deceased were in a heated argument over a woman who was previously in a relationship with the accused.

Ling had wanted to reconcile with the woman but when she refused, an argument ensued between the two men, which led to a fight.

The deceased allegedly punched the accused which prompted the accused to stab the deceased on the left rib with a kitchen knife. All three were drunk prior to the incident.
