KUCHING, June 18: Over 3,000 people are expected to participate in Saberkas Run 2019 scheduled to take place here on Sept 15.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the first category would cover a route from the old DUN Building to the Hamidah Roundabout, while the Family Run would pass the Astana.

The VIP Walk, however, is a 1km challenge up to the roundabout near the old DUN complex.

“Themed ‘Today for Tomorrow — Sayang Sarawak’ in conjunction with the Malaysia Day (Sept 16) celebration this year, this event promotes unity in the state’s diverse ethnic community,” he told a press conference here today.

This year’s edition of Saberkas Run is held in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, UCSI and Sarawak Research Society.

Apart from those who will be registering for the event on their own, the organisers are also sending registration forms to schools, higher institutions of learning, private companies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to enhance participation.

Fees for the run is set at RM50 for each runner of the 7km category. For the Family Run, fees are set at RM30 for each parent and RM20 for each child.

The top three runners for each category will receive a gold, silver and bronze medal, a special shirt and certificate.

Abdul Karim said each participant would receive a ‘Saberkas Run 2019’ T-shirt as well as food and drinks, vouchers, sponsored gifts and a finisher’s medal upon completing their event.

Started in 1996, Saberkas Run evolved into an international affair three years later and upgraded into a full-fledged marathon in 2006.

For registration and further details, interested participants can visit its Facebook page ‘Saberkas Run 2019’ or drop by the office at 20th floor, Wisma Saberkas.

The closing date for registration is July 30. — DayakDaily
