Sabah cancels Malaysia Day celebration amid severe floods in seven districts

KUCHING, Sept 15: The Sabah government has cancelled the State-level Malaysia Day celebration scheduled to take place at Padang Merdeka in Sabah tomorrow night in light of the severe floods and landslides caused by continuous heavy rain that have affected at least seven districts across the State.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the immediate priority of the State government is to manage the crisis, coordinate recovery efforts and ensure swift rescue operations for the affected communities.

“In these difficult times, the wellbeing, welfare and safety of the people are of utmost importance. All focus and resources must be directed to those impacted,” he said in a statement today.

Hajiji also informed Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman of the decision to call off the celebration.

He has further instructed the State Disaster Management Committee, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Sr Safar Untong, to remain on full alert and ready to take immediate action as the situation on the ground continues to evolve with the prolonged bad weather.

The committee is currently holding meetings to monitor developments and coordinate urgent action in the affected districts.

Hajiji also called on the public to stay vigilant, comply with safety advisories and fully cooperate with rescue teams as efforts are being intensified across the state. – DayakDaily
