KUCHING, May 11: Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) will be organising the `Free Sarawak 722’ peaceful rally on July 22 at Padang Merdeka.
S4S spokesperson William Mangor said this was in response to many Sarawakians’ unhappiness that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had not been Sarawak-centric and that the Sarawak government had been very slow in responding to the plight of Sarawakians.
He said the proposed rally was meant to push for a referendum.
“The recent attempt to amend the constitution in Parliament has escalated diversion and unity among Sarawakians. The majority of Sarawakians were worried that the amendment bill might be a fake amendment.
“This is because the federal government was trying to use the Federation of Malaya Constitution 1957 without referring to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), and, therefore, it is just a ‘pawn contract’,” he told a press conference today.
William claimed that so far, some 2,000 people had confirmed joining the proposed rally. During the last 722 rally in 2015, he claimed roughly 13,000 people participated.
Meanwhile, S4S member Erick Chin claimed that more than half of about 5,400 correspondents in Kuching agreed with S4S’s views on Sarexit and demanded the state government to enact a referendum.
“We have done a survey all over Kuching for the last one month, and surprisingly, there has been a rising number of Bumiputeras agreeing with us on the matter compared to the last time we did this (survey),” he said.
Chin reckoned that last time, maybe many Bumiputeras were afraid of the ruling government then and, therefore, refrained from supporting S4S’s ideals. — DayakDaily
