KUCHING, April 5: This coming July will be one heck of a month for Sarawak’s tourism calendar as the state will be host to three international events.

They are the 22nd Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in Kuching, the 14th Borneo Jazz Music in Miri, and the Rainforest Fringe Festival in Kuching which would act as a prelude to both events.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a revealing ceremony for the events here this afternoon said these musical festivals, particularly the RWMF had contributed a lot to the state in terms of tourism and return of investment (ROI).

During a press conference after officiating the “3 Festivals, 1 Destination” promotional campaign this afternoon, he said the state government invested some RM2 million in organising RWMF every year, and about RM3-4 million in the Jazz festival.

“The economic spinoff from just RWMF last year was about RM42 million,” Karim revealed.

He said he had been getting a lot of positive feedback from tourism and hotel industry players on the RWMF which had helped a lot in their businesses.

He also invited everyone to come to the Rainforest Fringe Festival in Kuching, a free event which would showcase the best of Sarawak’s local music scene, traditional arts, culture and crafts, films and photography, food and much more.

“To our visitors, the month of July is indeed an exciting time of the year in Sarawak simply because thousands of people from throughout the country and from across the globe are converging at our home ground to celebrate the universal passion and love for music,” he said.

The RWMF2019 will be held from July 12 to 14 at the Sarawak Cultural Village; the 14th Borneo Jazz Festival at Coco Cabana in Miri from July 19 to 21; and the Rainforest Fringe Festival from July 5 to 12.
