KUCHING, Oct 7: Russia is looking to expand youth and student exchanges with Sarawak, including scholarship and study opportunities, with its Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov expected to visit the State later this month.

According to a TVS report, Latypov said more than 600 Malaysian students are currently studying in Russia, but there was scope to increase the number through expanded exchange programmes and grants.

“We are expanding these opportunities and increasing the exchange programmes. We are also looking into increasing grants for Malaysian students,” he said in an exclusive interview with TVS on the sidelines of the Paya Besar Global Pulse 2026 even in Kuala Lumpur today.

Latypov said Malaysian students, including those from Sarawak, were welcome to pursue higher education in Russia.

“You are welcome to study in Russia from different parts of Malaysia, Pahang, Sarawak and other regions,” he said.

He added that he expected to visit Sarawak towards the end of the month and hoped to use the visit to engage with the state authorities on opportunities to strengthen youth exchanges and people-to-people ties.

“Maybe at the end of this month, I will have a chance to visit Sarawak,” he said.

Latypov said Russia and Malaysia had achieved positive progress in their bilateral relations in recent years, with young people expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping future ties between the two countries.

“The future of our relations is in the hands of young people,” he said.

He encouraged young Malaysians and Russians to participate actively in exchange programmes and related events, describing such initiatives as valuable opportunities to build understanding and strengthen long-term bilateral relations.

“We would like to ask them to actively take part in these events because I am really sure that it will be a very good experience for them and it will be very good for the future of our countries, both Russian and Malaysian,” he said. —DayakDaily
