KUCHING, Nov 20: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian says the approval of Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) registration is the beginning of a new political era for Sarawak.

He said with GPS as the platform, Sarawak can fight for its rights without previous constraints.

“This is the beginning of a new political era for Sarawak. Only Sarawakians can determine our own destiny. GPS which is based on four Sarawak parties shall fight for Sarawak without the previous constraints,” said Dr Sim in a statement yesterday.

For the Local Government and Housing Minister, Sarawak comes first and under the big umbrella of GPS, Sarawakians must work together.

“Sarawakians must work together as one and remain strongly united and avoid being divided and being exploited,” said Dr Sim.

However, he also warned that with the Registrar of Societies’ approval of GPS’s registration, there remains much to be done and there will be many challenges ahead for Sarawak.

“Let the best of the Sarawakian spirit prevail for us to achieve all our rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963,” said Dr Sim.

Dr Sim was commenting on yesterday’s announcement of the approval of GPS by the Home Ministry through GPS protem secretary-general Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi

According to Nanta who is also GPS protem secretary-general, he received the good news when he posed the question to Home Affairs Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during the latter’s winding-up speech at about 4pm yesterday.

GPS applied to be registered in early July, following the announcement of its establishment on June 12, this year.

There are currently four component parties in GPS — Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), SUPP, Party Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP). — DayakDaily
