KUCHING, Dec 21: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak will deploy undercover officers as express bus passengers to monitor drivers and ensure compliance with road regulations.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the initiative is aimed at safeguarding passenger safety by observing drivers’ behaviour during trips.

“We will place undercover personnel on buses to monitor drivers. This is to ensure they refrain from using mobile phones while driving, adhere to driver change schedules for specified distances, comply with driving time limits, and avoid speeding,” he explained.

He shared this when met by reporters at the Road Safety Advocacy Programme held in conjunction with the 2024 Christmas season at the Kuching Central Bus Terminal yesterday (Dec 20).

Hasbi emphasised that strict action will be taken against any violations of the rules.

“If our undercover personnel detect any infractions, the bus will be stopped immediately, and appropriate action will be taken.

“The bus company is also responsible for ensuring the journey continues by providing replacement drivers if necessary,” he added.

He noted that this operation is not limited to the Christmas season but will also be conducted during other festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

In fact, he expressed hope that this measure could be implemented year-round to enhance road safety. — DayakDaily
