KUCHING, Aug 4: Visitors heading to Kuching’s heritage villages along the Sarawak River now have a safer and more comfortable gateway following the completion of the RM918,000 upgrading of the Kampung Boyan-Gersik jetty.
Located along the Sarawak River, the Kampung Boyan-Gersik jetty is among the busiest in the area, serving as an important transport link for residents travelling between the riverbanks.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the project was officially handed over today during a site visit witnessed by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Regional Development Agencies Coordination, North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
The upgrading works included the reconstruction of key facilities such as the guide pillars, pontoon, gangway and jetty walkway, replacing ageing infrastructure that had deteriorated after years of continuous use.
Besides improving safety for daily users, the new jetty has been designed with better accessibility, featuring facilities that are more user-friendly for senior citizens, wheelchair users and persons with disabilities.
It also serves as the main entry point for visitors exploring Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Surabaya, villages well known for their traditional delicacies, cottage industries and locally made handicrafts.
The upgraded facility is expected to enhance both the daily commuting experience for residents and the arrival experience for tourists visiting the riverside communities. — DayakDaily
