BAU, Dec 12: Upgrading works on the Buso–Musi road costing RM73 million have officially begun, marking a major step towards resolving persistent flood threats, including issues affecting SK Buso and nearby settlements.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the project, which also involves constructing a new concrete bridge and strengthening the local road network, is now moving into the final phase of addressing long-standing concerns in the area.
He emphasised that tackling these issues is part of the government’s responsibility to safeguard the wellbeing of the people, adding that the progress achieved so far reflects strong commitment toward enhancing basic infrastructure and public safety.
“The Premier of Sarawak (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) has underlined the importance of developing this area as an alternative route linking Pan Borneo to Bau, especially as Bau continues to grow rapidly and requires more robust infrastructure support.
“In line with this vision, the Sarawak government has approved RM73 million for the construction of the alternative road, which includes a new concrete bridge to be built alongside the existing Bailey bridge, which will remain operational,” he said during the site handover ceremony for the Buso–Musi road upgrading project today.
Harry, who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman, added that the upgraded road will also facilitate the relocation of Buso villagers to a safer expansion area once the project is completed, further reducing flood risks.
He noted that the road is being constructed to standards that will support vehicles with loads of up to 80 tonnes.
Also present were Bau District Officer Eddy Nayoi, Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching Division assistant engineer Ir Ts Angelia Belly, Bau District Council secretary Ong Chin Ping, and other invited guests. — DayakDaily
