SIBU, Feb 28: Two men were arrested for having in their possession 25 carton of contraband beer and 2,895 cartons of contraband cigarettes on Thursday.
Including a van, all items seized worth a total of RM723,600 including tax.
Deputy commander of 10th Batallion General Operation Force, DSP Frediel Nyambong said today that a team of enforcement officers from the battalion had at 3pm on Thursday conducted a raid on a storehouse in Kampung Melaban, Betong.
“The raid resulted in the seizure of the contraband beer and cigarette and a van. Two men who were at the storehouse were also apprehended,” he said.
According to Frediel, the modus operandi of the suspects was to keep the contraband in a store in a remote area before distributing them in Betong.
The items were seized under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Custom Act. The offence provides for a fine of RM100,000 or 10 times the value of the items seized and a jail sentence of a minimum of not more than three years.
Frediel said the two suspects have been referred to the police in Betong for further action. — DayakDaily
