KUCHING, Sept 11: The RM7.15 billion Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 2, spanning more than 335 kilometres and slated for full completion by June 2029, has become a focal point of the government’s push to strengthen Borneo’s road network.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, together with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is scheduled to officiate the project’s launch today.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the mega project, which commenced on June 24, 2024, is poised to transform northern Sarawak, an area long hampered by the absence of standard paved roads linking it to Sabah.
Existing routes remain distant, fragmented, and unsystematic, restricting mobility, limiting access to basic services, hindering economic integration, and slowing balanced regional growth.
SSLR Phase 2 will carve out a new land corridor breathing fresh life into Sarawak and Sabah, serving as a catalyst for stronger connectivity, logistical efficiency, and expanded economic and socio-cultural opportunities.
Once completed, the long-standing infrastructure gap that has shackled northern Sarawak will finally be bridged, strengthening ties between the two states.
The project covers key stretches including Mulu–Long Seridan (65km), Long Seridan–Nanga Medamit (108km), Long Luping–Long Komap in Ba’Kelalan (63km), and Rumah Aling–Long Luping (99km).
Built to JKR R3 and R1 standards, the road will feature major bridges, flyovers, erosion control slopes, modern drainage systems, rest and service (R&R) areas, and bus stops for public convenience.
Beyond physical infrastructure, SSLR Phase 2 emphasises sustainability and environmental compliance.
Environmental and Social Impact Assessments are being undertaken to safeguard ecosystems and local communities, while advanced technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and KKR IPMS are deployed for efficient lifecycle management.
Upon completion, travel times will be shortened, access to essential services expanded, and local trade and industry opportunities widened.
Ultimately, SSLR Phase 2 is more than a new road; it is a symbol of progress and a lifeline for development that will reshape the future of northern Sarawak and Sabah. — DayakDaily
