BETONG, Sept 4: The RM60 million Agropark development project in Spaoh is set to become a catalyst for transforming the modern agriculture sector in Bukit Saban.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has already commenced work on the project, which will significantly benefit local communities, particularly the younger generation keen to venture into modern farming.

“We are very satisfied with the progress of the Agropark development because it is an important project. I believe it opens up opportunities for youth and local communities to be involved in agriculture more systematically and commercially,” he said.

Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, made these remarks after chairing the Betong Development and Development Agency (BDDA) meeting at the Spaoh Subdistrict Office on Wednesday (Sept 3), where discussions also covered the implementation of other key development initiatives.

He stressed that the government’s long-term vision is to position Bukit Saban as a competitive producer of agricultural products, not just to meet local consumption but also to supply wider markets across Sarawak.

Beyond the Agropark, the BDDA meeting also explored the potential of rice cultivation in the area.

According to Uggah, trials with new high-yield seed varieties are currently underway to boost production, with the goal of making Bukit Saban one of Sarawak’s main rice-producing regions.

“With the Agropark and other projects in the pipeline, I am confident that Spaoh and Bukit Saban will experience rapid development by 2030, in line with Sarawak’s vision to uplift the people’s economic wellbeing through modern and sustainable agriculture,” he added. — DayakDaily
