KUCHING, Oct 6: Police have reminded the public not to be easily deceived by vehicle sale advertisements on social media offering unusually low prices, following a case in Bau in which an individual lost RM25,000.

According to a post on Facebook, on Aug 20, the victim was drawn in by an advertisement on Facebook offering a Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8A for RM31,000.

The victim then communicated via WhatsApp with an individual who went by the name ‘Mr Pun’ from an outsourcing agency, as well as another individual who claimed to be CS The from a towing company.

After agreeing to the advertised vehicle price, the victim was instructed to make a down payment and several other payments, purportedly for processing purposes, before the vehicle could be delivered.

The victim subsequently made several transactions totalling approximately RM25,000 into four different bank accounts as instructed by the suspects.

However, the victim realised they had been scammed when they were asked to make additional payments under various pretexts.

“Scammers usually request advance payments or processing fees repeatedly before the vehicle is handed over,” said the post.

At the same time, police advised the public to verify the authenticity of the advertisement and seller, avoid dealing with unknown individuals, not make any payment before physically viewing the vehicle, and report to the police if they suspect they’re being scammed.
