KUCHING, April 15: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced that approximately RM300 million is allocated for the construction of the deep sea port located off Kuala Baram.
He said this tonight during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri ceremony, which was held at Mega Hotel Miri in Miri.
“It is a reclaimed port with a depth of 12 metres. We (the Sarawak government) have approved approximately RM300 million for the deep sea port for Miri,” said Abang Johari.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari also said that there has been a plan to increase electrical production in Northern Sarawak, a plan that will be undertaken by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) to generate a 500MW power plant in Miri.
“This plan will be developed by Petros and the generated electricity will be distributed to Northern Sarawak.
“This will strengthen our energy generation and can attract more energy-based investments,” he said.
To Abang Johari, this (deep sea port and electric powerplant development) will encourage more investors to come to Miri, believing that the region has a bright future.
Earlier in February, Petros was reported to have invested RM2 billion in developing a 400MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) powerplant to supply electricity in Miri.
Also present at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri ceremony were Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Pan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and other notable attendees. — DayakDaily
