KOTA SAMARAHAN, March 29: Construction of the RM30 million high-level water tank in Taman Samarindah is expected to start this year, aiming to resolve chronic water pressure issues in the 5,000-unit residential area.

Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim said the tender process for the project has been completed, and the appointment of a contractor is now underway.

“We have completed the tender process and are now in the process of appointing a contractor.

“Once the appointment is finalised, I expect construction to begin this year,” Hamzah told reporters when met at Hari Raya open house hosted by Stakan Service Centre here today.

He explained that Taman Samarindah, being one of the largest housing areas in Sarawak with over 5,000 houses, often experiences reduced water pressure due to high consumption.

“Water pressure problems are unavoidable when usage is high,” he stressed.

Hamzah also revealed that a temporary solution is being explored with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUTS) led by Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

“At the same time, I have discussed with the ministry led by Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, requesting their assistance and advice on an alternative solution.

“They welcomed the proposal and are now conducting a study for a temporary water tank, which is currently in progress.

“My hope is that this plan can be implemented to help reduce the water pressure problems in Taman Samarindah, InshaAllah. This is what we are working on at the moment,” Hamzah added.

Approved in April 2025, the RM30 million project involves two high-level water tanks, each with a capacity of 4.5 million litres, and will be implemented by the then Kuching Water Board (KWB), now Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd.

The project is expected to take 18 months to complete. – DayakDaily
