SIBU, Auhg 26: A RM3.61 million project to upgrade Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, one of the main routes in the northern part of Sibu town often hit by floods, has officially begun to address recurring flood problems that have long disrupted traffic flow in the area.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the project commenced on Sept 18, 2025, and is expected to be completed within four months, by Jan 17, 2026.

He explained that funding for the project includes a special allocation from the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, under the Natural Disaster Relief Fund, along with additional provisions through the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

“I promised in February that this road would be upgraded. Although we had to go through various government procedures, I am glad we are able to launch this project today.

“I would like to thank the Premier of Sarawak for approving an additional RM2.5 million under the Natural Disaster Relief Fund, on top of the RM1.11 million I channelled from the RTP, making up the total RM3.61 million,” he told reporters after the project handover ceremony on Monday (Aug 25).

The Pelawan assemblyman added that the upgrading works involve raising the road by an average height of 750 millimetres along a one-kilometre stretch in both directions, starting from the Jalan Deshon junction up to the nearby bridge.

He further assured that the project design incorporates an effective drainage system to prevent any negative impact on nearby residential areas.

During the construction period, the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will deploy traffic wardens to manage and control traffic flow, ensuring minimal inconvenience to road users.
