KUCHING, March 27: The roof of the covered basketball court at SJKC Chung Hua Batu Kawa, which has deteriorated after two decades of exposure to the elements, will be replaced under a RM250,000 refurbishment project.
Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has allocated the funds through his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) initiative to upgrade the facility.
According to a press statement issued by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Kawa Service Centre, the project includes replacing the entire roof, repainting the structure’s beams and columns, and refinishing the court flooring.

The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will oversee the implementation of the refurbishment, with the contractor selected via an open tender process.
The project was officially handed over to the contractor today, with renovation works set to commence on April 7 and expected to be completed by July 6.
The covered basketball court serves as a vital hub for community activities, hosting sports tournaments, local association banquets, and recreational games. However, years of wear and tear have left the roof heavily rusted and riddled with leaks, causing disruptions during events, particularly in rainy weather.
School board chairman Kapitan Chai Min Sin had formally requested assistance from Dr Sim to address the deteriorating condition of the facility. Following his appeal, the funding was approved, paving the way for much-needed improvements to ensure the court remains a key venue for sports and community gatherings in Batu Kawa. — DayakDaily
